Mental Health Resources & Tools
Mental health is one of Phi Gamma Delta’s priorities, and it is important we provide resources to our brothers and volunteers.
Phi Gamma Delta Resources
Behind Happy Faces (BHF) is a mental health curriculum designed to give young men the tools needed to address their mental health. There are nine lessons which define mental health, break down the stigmas surrounding it, open doors for more discussions, teach about effective coping, and help participants support friends who are experiencing mental health challenges.
BHF is available at no cost to chapters and can be facilitated by a chapter member, graduate advisor or volunteer. Review the content of all nine lessons and evaluate what will be beneficial to your members.
Examples When You Can Use Different BHF Sessions Strategically
- Understanding Mental Health (August): Welcome back program to start the year with conversations of mental health.
- Your Mental Health (August): Welcome back program to start the year with conversations of mental health.
- Changing Ineffective Coping (March): Program prior to breaks.
- Talk to a Brother (February): Program related to their relationship with each other.
- Before the Breakdown (April): Program to help with stress prior to finals.
- Acute Stress vs. Chronic Stress (September): Program to help with stress prior to mid-terms.
- Good Stress & Stopping Procrastination (October): Program to help with finalizing the semester academically.
- Sympathy, Empathy & Compassion (November): Program to help open dialogue about going “home” for those who may not have a strong home environment and for those who may not know that some do not have a strong home environment.
- Neuroscience of Happiness – Any Time
Each lesson includes videos, PowerPoint presentations, facilitation guides and handouts. You can access them by logging into Phi Gamma Delta’s Learning Portal. (Note: BHF sessions meet the requirements for Success in College Menu Experience.)
Phi Gamma Delta partnered with Archie Messersmith-Bunting to develop a Mental Wellness Guide for chapter leadership and volunteers. Chapter leadership should review the mental wellness guide as a team to discuss their approach to supporting themselves and chapter members.
Chapter leadership should also use the Wellness Resource Contact List to identify local resources available to members and share the list with members.
National Alliance on Mental Illness
Resources from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) provides information and data to showcase why mental health is important.
- Mental Health By the Numbers – statistics and facts related to the impact mental health has on society.
- Review the Warning Signs & Symptoms for mental health so you can support and enable others to get the help they need. This doesn’t mean serving as a mental health expert.
- Identity & Cultural Dimensions – learn how mental health impacts identities and cultures differently.
Resources for Volunteers & Graduate Brothers
Advisor’s Mental Health Workshop: This series is facilitated by Ross Szabo, creator of Behind Happy Faces, to provide training on mental health basics for advisors.
